A Bowl of Chicken Soup and a Bedtime Story
The Federal Government has suddenly realized that the average citizen does not have enough spending money. In order to combat the problem they have decided to do what any benevolent parent would do for their depressed child on a rainy day, they are giving us some spending money. It is kind of like when you have been asking mom or dad for some cash and they keep saying, "I don't have any money" for months but then it magically appears. Just like those parents, we are not convinced that they could not afford to give it to us; we realize that they had the money all along and now they are finally giving it to us. This is only after we have been wearing shoes with holes in them while they have been driving around in their new Cadillac Escalade and spending money like it is going out of style.
Although I appreciate the fact that the Feds have come to the sudden realization that the average citizen does not have a ton of extra spending money, I kind of wish they would deal with why we have no money rather than just throwing us money. The funds will probably just wind up going overseas via Wal-Mart or assist Exxon's drive to shatter another record in profits by a US company. It is kind of like trying to cure Brittany Spear's mental illness with a bowl of chicken soup and a bedtime story; although it is a good start, it is a bit late for it to be effective even if the soup is homemade.
I am not a genius when it comes to economic policy but I am guessing that after the rebates checks are gone that if the price of gas is still high then the two jobs created at McDonald's will be gone when the new employees cannot afford to drive to work. Of course, this same administration sent its troops to fight for oil and yet the price tripled. When this "rebate" runs out I want a rebate from the Iraqi government for all of their stuff we paid for and then after that I want a rebate from Exxon for all of the tax subsidies I have paid for while their quarterly profits of over ten billion dollars. The gas price situation is a perfect example of the type of corporate greed that is destroying the middle class, you do not hear about it very often because large corporations now control even the media, once predominantly locally owned and heavily regulated by the federal government.
Nonetheless, I will spend the money on something for myself, then the government will take sales tax out of it immediately, and I will probably have to claim it on my income tax next year. After I have paid my school tax and property tax I will probably wish I had the tax rebate check back to pay my mortgage and my utility bills, which are all taxed. I will then call my congressional representative on my cell phone to ask for another economic stimulus plan but my cell phone will shut off in the middle of the conversation because I cannot pay the cell phone tax.
I imagine that once the situation bad again the government will issue new rebate checks. I hope that they will have a place for me to pick up the next check after the bank forecloses my house I will be living in my car. I will take a bus to get there.
